Many poker pros could have had bigger bankroll and bigger earnings if they only understand proper bankroll management, but because they do not understand the concept of bankroll management, they lose huge amounts of money. Money that should have been theirs now goes into the pockets of their backers, the people who manage their bankroll for them because they simply cannot.

Compiled here are some guidelines on understanding and managing bankroll.

Know What Your Money is for

This is probably one of the biggest mistakes that poker players make because, sometimes, all they see is the money that they can spend. What they have to realize is that their bankroll and their budget for their daily living are separate entities. Their bankroll should be for their poker games, but their day-to-day budget should never go to their poker bankroll.

Know Your Limits

There are players that see their bankroll as one big wad of money that they could gamble away in one sitting, but what they do not realize is that, if they take all their bankroll with them during a game, their chances of losing all their gambling money increase. What they can do then is to put away some of their bankroll money so that, in case, he losses a game, he still has some bankroll left.

Know Your Pace

Now that you have separated your bankroll from your daily budget and have stashed some of your bankroll away so as not to lose them in one sitting, the next thing that you should do is to know your pace. Let us say for example that you took with you $50 worth of gambling money. What you should never do is to sit down on a table that has a minimum betting amount of $25. This defeats the purpose of managing your bankroll because, if you lose at that table, you will lose a huge chunk of your gambling budget for the day. It is wiser to start at low-limit tables.

Know Your Loss Limits and Win Goals

This is very important because there are players who easily get blinded by the fact that they are on a winning streak. For this reason, poker players should know their win goals. For example, you have won $100. Of course, you can stay for more games, but if your winnings dropped to $70, known when to quit, lest you lose them all. On the other hand, if you went in with a bankroll of $100, you should give yourself a loss limit, for example $80, and know when to quit when you have reached it.

Know When to Increase Your Bets

Last tip in bankroll management — increasing your bet sizes when you are on a losing streak is a big no-no.

Many poker fans are now talking about the recent ending of the Asian Poker Tour. The said tournament was a 12-day event held at the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Macau, and it has seen many poker pros who have signed up for the APT. The number of registrants was up from last year's 257. Today, the APT had seen 326 registrants who competed for the prize money.

Up from Last Year

As stated above, the number of poker players who registered at the APT increased from 2008's 257 to 326. The buy-in fee for the Asian Poker Tour's main event was HK $34,000, and the organization of the tournament was pleased with the turnout, especially since they have feared a low number due to the current economic problems. Truth to tell, APT was only anticipating about 300 registrants for the main event but was very pleased at the outcome since more than the projected number has registered. CEO of APT, Chris Parker, remarked that their decision to make this a 12-day event was proven correct because of the turnout. He also commented that the said event saw a bigger number of Asian participants, compared to last year's, and APT took this as an encouraging sign for the growth of APT.
